One of the seven wonders of the ancient world, the Pyramids of Giza have been a fascination with humans for millennia.

The massive pyramid, built for Pharaoh Khufu and completed around 2560 BC, is the only one of the seven wonders of the ancient world still intact.

Located on the outskirts of Cairo, Egypt, this complex has a total of 6 pyramids, 3 towering pyramids (Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure) and 3 smaller pyramids, plus the giant sphinx statue is an attractive destination for tourists.

Until now, scientists have been unable to understand what means the ancient Egyptians used to transport and build such a large-volume structure. In addition, the Giza pyramid complex has geographical challenges that astronomers cannot decipher.

American archaeologist and engineer Glen Dash came up with a different, simpler idea. His research suggests that the Egyptians about 4,500 years ago may have used the Equinox point to achieve that perfect alignment.

The equinox is considered to be the time of occurrence twice a year (feces spring and equinox), when the plane of the Earth’s equator passes through the center of the Solar disk, and the length of day and night is relatively equal.

Stool point measurements have previously been considered a method of alignment that can… ignored, as it is assumed that it will not provide enough accuracy. But Glen Dash’s work has shown that there is one way that the use of feces points can work – that is, using gnomon – solar clock columns.

To discover this, Glen Dash actually conducted his own experiment, which began on the first day of the 2016 Fall Equinox point – which falls on September 22, 2016 – and used a gnomon to cast a shadow.

The archaeologist monitors the point of the shadow in regular intervals, forming a smooth curve that connects the points together. And at the end of the day, with a stretch of wire wrapped around the pole, Glen Dash blocked two points of the curve and created a near-perfect straight line running east-west.

Glen Dash points out that the level of error is similar to the small error found in the alignment of the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure at Giza.

The trial was conducted in connecticut, but Glen Dash said the same would work in Egypt.

In fact, all the ancient Egyptians needed to align the pyramids on a sunny, cloudy day, glen dash explains. He added that the Egyptians could calculate the equinox by counting 91 days later from the summer solstice.

Although the American archaeologist’s research is wholehearted because egyptian pyramid studies show that this technique can be used to align the alignment of the pyramids, we do not yet have any solid evidence that the ancient Egyptians did so.

“Unfortunately, the Egyptians left us with very few clues. There are no technical documents or architectural manuscripts that offer a technical explanation for how the ancient Egyptians aligned any of their temples or pyramids,” wrote Glen Dash.

While we may never know what actually happened, this hypothesis makes an interesting point – that something as simple as mapping shadows in the time of Autumn equinox may be sophisticated enough to arrange some of humanity’s most recognizable ancient structures.
